Bill Belichick Snubs Trump for Medal of Freedom

As a private citizen, the Medal of Freedom is considered to be the highest honor one can win.

To stand at the White House and have this medal put around your neck by the president is a dream come true scenario… except for Bill Belichick.

President Trump was obviously trying to flip the script in terms of negative coverage, but Belichick decided that he would not take part.

After having been offered the Medal of Freedom during Trump’s last week in the White House, Belichick politely told Trump “No thanks,” citing the recent events at the Capitol.

In turning Trump down for the award, Belichick stated, “Recently, I was offered the opportunity to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which I was flattered by out of respect for what the honor represents and admiration for prior recipients.

“Subsequently, the tragic events of last week occurred and the decision has been made not to move forward with the award.

“Above all, I am an American citizen with great reverence for our nation’s values, freedom and democracy. I know I also represent my family and the New England Patriots team.

“One of the most rewarding things in my professional career took place in 2020 when, through the great leadership within our team, conversations about social justice, equality and human rights moved to the forefront and became actions.

“Continuing those efforts while remaining true to the people, team and country I love outweigh the benefits of any individual award.”

The only way to describe this is a slap in the face for Trump, who maintains a friendship with the Patriots owner as well as a friendly relationship with Belichick.

He was clearly counting on Belichick to help him turn the news cycle, and instead, it just completely backfired, embarrassing Trump further.
