Blue Origin has suffered its first setback.
While Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has enjoyed a fairly decent run of luck, the reality of his little pet project just came crashing down to earth.
A Blue Origin rocket exploded during a launch on Monday.
The only solace Bezos can take from this is that the ship that exploded was unmanned.
The scene was both spectacular and horrifying, and the rocket exploded only about a minute into its flight…
It does appear that Bezos was able to save the cargo in the capsule.
The emergency launch abort system worked perfectly, lifting the capsule off the rocket so it could parachute to the ground.
This particular rocket is specifically being used to launch experiments.
However, it is very similar to what Bezos has been using to launch people into space on his craft.
As the rocket exploded, Blue Origin’s launch team stated, “It appears we’ve experienced an anomaly with today’s flight. This wasn’t planned.”
About an hour after the failed launch, Blue Origin added, “Booster failure on today’s uncrewed flight. Escape system performed as designed.”
So far, Blue Origins has taken 31 passengers into space.
It goes without saying that every time Bezos takes paying customers up into space, his entire fortune is on the line.
