A very popular pastor in Texas found out the hard way you need to be a pastor all the time, even when you think conversations are private.
Matt Chandler, who was serving as the pastor at Village Church in Dallas, is out.
Chandler has been relieved as the church’s lead pastor after inappropriate comments were leaked to church officials.
Chandler was exchanging messages with a woman that were brought to the attention of church elders.
The conversation was not sexual in nature, but the elders stated that Chandler “did not use language appropriate for a pastor, and he did not model a behavior that we expect from him.”
The messages came to light after a congregation member approached Chandler about the messages he had exchanged with a friend.
The church hired an outside auditor to examine the messages and decided to relieve Chandler of his duties.
While no longer the pastor of the mega-church, he has not been completely ousted from the church.
The church elders stated, “Matt will spend time during his leave from the pulpit focusing on his development with the elders and guided by outside counselors.
“He will also continue to fulfill limited administrative leadership duties.”
