Joe Biden may be leading in all of the polls right now, but there are still four months before election day and several weeks before absentee ballot voting begins.
As anyone in politics knows, that is an eternity.
Former Democrat presidential candidate and Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis knows all too well how much believing your own headlines can hurt your campaign.
Dukakis, who lost to then-Vice President George H.W. Bush in 1988, was almost in Biden’s same shoes during that election and as we all know, he lost.
By late July 1988, Dukakis was leading Bush 55-38 in polls, yet he crashed and burned on election day.
Dukakis stated, “Particularly this year, [polls] should be studied cautiously.
“Biden can and should win, but being at 50, no matter how weak your opponent is, is no guarantee of success.”
Reagan helped that collapse by calling Dukakis “the invalid” during the campaign, immediately causing an almost double-digit drop in the polls.
Alex Beam, a Boston Globe columnist can see this all happening again.
Beam stated, “I think Biden now is weaker than Dukakis in 1988.
“Biden is battling an incumbent president who can wield the levers of power to his own benefit almost any time he wants.
“And Biden, you can argue, is no Dukakis.”
