The big news regarding the Supreme Court this week was that Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) introduced court-packing legislation.
Nadler and company were proposing an additional four justices to the court so there would be a liberal advantage.
Shockingly, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced that she would not be bringing the legislation to the House floor for a vote.
It was only a few days ago that Joe Biden launched a commission to research options for the Supreme Court, among them, adding more justices to the bench.
Well, Jerry Nadler and company decided to beat Biden to the punch, announcing his own legislation to pack the court with four additional justices.
Pelosi, however, is shutting that down, at least for now.
Pelosi stated, “I support the president’s commission to study such a proposal, but frankly I’m not — right now, we’re back, our members, our committees are working.
“We’re putting together the infrastructure bill and the rest.
“I don’t know that that’s a good idea or a bad idea.
“I think it’s an idea that should be considered and I think the president’s taking the right approach.”
The White House also shut down the idea for now but did so rather gingerly.
When White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked about the legislation, she stated, “[The commission] is going to come back to the president with a report on what their discussions are and what their findings are, so he’s gonna wait for that to play out and wait to read that report.”
She later added, “The president believes it’s important to look at a range of points of view.
“He believes that members of Congress have the right to put forward legislation on issues they support.
“His view is that he wants to hear from this commission that has a range of viewpoints.”
I would not get overly excited about this little stand by Pelosi, however, as we fully expect Joe’s commission to come back with the recommendation that the court add justices, so Pelosi could just table the legislation until the recommendation is made, then move forward.
