Senator Richard Burr (R-N.C.) recently announced that he will not pursue his seat again in 2022.
This is more than likely due to some rather controversial stock purchases he made which many consider being insider trading.
There was widespread speculation that if Trump did not win re-election, Chief of Staff Mark Meadows would run, but there are numerous reports that it will actually be Lara Trump who could be the frontrunner for Republicans to keep the seat in 2022.
Donald Trump Jr. seemed to be the obvious choice to run for office but it is now his sister-in-law that could be the next Trump to hold office.
Lara Trump has significant ties to North Carolina and has delivered the state in both 2016 and 2020 for the President.
Senator Rick Scott (R-FL), who will also be serving as the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) chair, stated, “I’ve got to recruit somebody in Pennsylvania, and somebody in North Carolina, for Richard Burr and Pat Toomey, so that will be work. But if we do that, I think we have a good opportunity to not just defend but pick up.”
If Lara Trump commits to running, it should all but lock up Burr’s seat and allow Republicans to concentrate on keeping Toomey’s seat in PA to ensure Republicans can hold and possibly expand an advantage in the Senate.
