A rather shocking report surfaced late last night that just may be enough to save President Trump’s political future.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and President Trump reportedly had a conversation where Trump admitted he bore some blame for the Capitol riot.
After the report surfaced, however, the White House has refused to comment on it.
It is tough to imagine how Trump’s base will respond to this news, but McCarthy is clearly trying to conduct some damage control here.
The party as a whole does not want to lose the support of Trump’s base, but the way things currently look, Trump will have little impact on the future of the party.
If McCarthy can get Dems to back off on the impeachment and save Trump’s image a bit, that could change.
McCarthy revealed this during a House GOP conference call, which undoubtedly floored everyone on the call.
Additionally, McCarthy stated that he recommended President Trump call Joe Biden and formally congratulate him on winning the election.
Standing by Trump
McCarthy’s suggestions and revelation may be perceived as a slight by Trump supporters, but I don’t think that is the case.
McCarthy has and continues to be one of Trump’s biggest supporters in the House, and he clearly wants him to have some type of voice moving forward.
It did not help matters that Trump took more than a day to come out against the rioters, stating, “To those who engaged in the acts of violence and destruction, you do not represent our country.
“And to those who broke the law, you will pay.”
Everything McCarthy is doing right now is to try to prevent an impeachment of Trump, of that I have no doubt.
