On Tuesday, President Trump beat the Democrats at their own game.
While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her fellow members of the House continue their extended vacation, President Trump introduced an Executive Order that will cut them off at the knees.
During a Rose Garden press conference, Trump signed a law enforcement EO, stating, “chokeholds will be banned except if an officer’s life is at risk.”
Time for Change
Videos that have come to light recently, all spurred on by the death or George Floyd, have made it plainly clear we need reform on some techniques used by officers in the carrying out of their duties.
In dozens of non-life-threatening incidents, officers were seen either putting suspects into a chokehold or using the same technique that cost George Floyd his life, the kneeling on the suspect’s neck for control.
Some will argue that method has prevented situations from becoming life-threatening, which is why the officers use it, but they will be fought tooth and nail by those that say one unnecessary loss of life is one too many.
It is not the life of an officer is deemed to be less important than any criminal suspect but rather the notion our law enforcement simply needs to be better than the individuals they are arresting in every way.
With recent calls from both the left and right to do something, it was far better for police reform to come from this administration than to allow Democrats to introduce measures that would make it virtually impossible for the police to do their jobs.
Additionally, with Trump being the one to introduce the reform, it takes the legs right out from Democrats in the House that continue to refuse to do their job as elected officials.
Don’t Defund, Reform
In the wake of the death of George Floyd, we have seen far too many calls for the complete defunding of police departments.
This EO by Trump draws a firm line in the sand that while open to reform, Trump in no way backs any move that would defund any police department.
He stated, “I strongly oppose the radical and dangerous efforts to defund, dismantle and dissolve our police departments.
“Especially now when we’ve achieved the lowest recorded crime rates in recent history.”
He added, “Without police there is chaos, without law there is anarchy and without safety there is a catastrophe.
“When you remove the police, you hurt those who have the least, the most.”
The balanced EO by Trump has already received the endorsement from law enforcement professionals.
The National Fraternal Order of Police stated, “It strikes a great balance between the vital need for public and officer safety, and the equally vital need for lasting, meaningful, and enforceable police reform.
“In our view, President Trump and Congressional leaders are working constructively with law enforcement and community stakeholders to undertake earnest law enforcement reforms that will make our officers and the public they protect safer.”
That is a significant win for Trump, as law enforcement organizations have refused to accept any reform measures for years.
This could play a significant role for Trump in the general election as well as for down-ballot Republicans.
Democrats are already attacking the EO, as they are the Senate’s reform legislation, but that is to be expected.
Meanwhile, it is once again the Republican party putting forth major change to positively impact the minority communities of this country while Nancy Pelosi continues to stuff her face full of gourmet ice cream.
