Wasteful COVID Spending Gets the Spotlight as Biden Asks for $22.4B More

When Biden took office, he was given $1.9 trillion for COVID.

Now he is asking for another $22.4 billion and more than $3 billion for monkeypox.

Before he gets that money, the GOP will make a big stink about the wasteful spending in the relief bill and all the money that was diverted.

Not How It Was Sold

When Biden sold the bill to the American people, he stated, “For over a year, the American people were told they were on their own.

“We’ve seen how hard that has been on so many Americans.

“Everything in this package is designed to relieve the suffering and to meet the most urgent needs of the nation and put us in a better position to prevail, starting with beating this virus and vaccinating the country.”

Biden later added, “It’s going to require fastidious oversight to make sure there’s no waste or fraud, and the law does what it’s designed to do. And I mean it: We have to get this right.”

That oversight is a complete joke.

Of the $100 billion given for schools, only 12 percent has been spent.

About 20 percent of the $350 billion given to local and state governments has been spent.

Manhattan Institute senior fellow Brian Riedl stated, “Washington allocated $350 billion to state and local governments to close budget deficits that did not even exist.

“These states are totally awash in more money than they know what to do with, so it’s no surprise they haven’t allocated yet – they’re going to be sitting on this money for years.”

Other money went for things that had nothing at all to do with COVID.

For instance, SWAT teams were given rescue vehicle, racial equity programs were funded, and one of my favorites, $4.9 million for a “No Stopping New York” ad campaign.

This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Two things need to happen here.

First, Biden needs to be held accountable for the wasteful spending.

Second, before Congress gives him another cent, any unused money from that $1.9 trillion needs to be pulled back and put toward that $22.4 billion he is asking.

I will go out on a limb and say there is more than enough sitting on the sidelines to pay for it.
